Albedo One, Ireland’s magazine of science fiction, fantasy and horror, is seeking imaginative submissions  for the 4th annual Aeon Award for short fiction as part of its goal of promoting new writers and writing in the speculative fiction genres.

The International Aeon Award 2009 contest is for short fiction in any speculative genre, including fantasy, SF, horror or anything in between - the trickier to classify the better!

The best story, as judged by renowned speculative fiction author Ian Watson will receive a grand prize of €1,000, while second and third place prizes will receive €200 and €100 respectively. Each of the top three stories will also be published in Albedo One. The entry fee is €7.

The deadline is November 30th 2009, after which point the  judges will choose the six highest-ranking stories from the shortlist to be judged by Ian.

You may submit any number of stories, providing they are each fewer than 8,000 words long. You can send them by post to Aeon Award, 8 Bachelor’s Walk, Dublin 1, Republic of Ireland.

Alternatively send your story or stories pasted into the body of an email to fraslaw@yahoo.co.uk, with the subject Aeon Award Submission.

Entries are allowed from all nationalities. Indeed, the judges are keen to see work from as many countries as possible. However, entries must be in the English language.

In 2008 the contest received a record number of entries and the judges were able to shortlist a record number of stories of high merit, 40 in total, almost half of which were from female authors. Seven stories were chosen by the judges to be read by Ian Watson. The winner of the Grand Prize was Twinkle Twinkle by Colin Henchley, which Ian Watson described as: “incredibly powerful and vividly written.”

Colin Henchley  leaves us with these thought-provoking words: “Minds agile enough to travel alternate realities are minds equipped to question the values of this one. Long may it be so.”
