© Mike Moloney
BBC Youth & Children’s Magazines is looking for a full-time Production Editor to cover maternity leave for a minimum of nine months. This is a highly varied and involved opportunity to work for one of the UK’s biggest media companies where you’ll be responsible for drawing together all the elements of Top Of The Pops Magazine, as well as assisting with several other BBC titles. It’s a role that will particularly suit journalists with an interest in music and teen publications.
This includes ensuring the layout of copy is in accordance with the title’s style and policy, and scheduling copy, design and approvals. You’ll also need to ensure a steady and manageable flow of work to keep production schedules running smoothly while meeting the internal repro and external printer deadlines.
As well as having a fine eye for detail, you will also need to be able to see the bigger picture, and should be as comfortable managing people as deadlines, as you will be overseeing full-time and freelance subs.
Additionally, you’ll liaise with numerous departments daily, including the in-house repro team, licensors and the immediate editorial team, as well as production, marketing, buying and advertising teams.
Under the guidance of the Group Production Editor, you’ll also be required to spend some days each month working on other titles in the department: Girl Talk, Doctor Who Adventures and All About Animals. You’ll need experience on consumer magazines as either Production Editor or Chief Sub, with a demonstrable, solid understanding of working with production techniques and printing processes.
You should be a strong communicator with the ability to contribute creative ideas and motivate and manage a team. Proven skills with InDesign, subbing and signing off proofs are essential, while knowledge of the current teen market would be a significant advantage .
Experience and skills required for this editorial role
Ideally, you should have previous experience on consumer magazines, ideally as a Production Editor/Chief Sub on a weekly title, experience and demonstrable solid understanding of working with production techniques and printing processes, accuracy, an awareness of house styles and the creativity to write humorous captions and creative headlines, the ability to contribute ideas, communicate well, and motivate and manage a team, plus an appreciation of and empathy with the subject matter.
Naturally, excellent subbing skills and competence in InDesign are crucial.
