Bournemouth Borough Council Libraries and Arts Division are seeking short story submissions for a new national competition as part of the National Year of Reading.

The competition aims to encourage and showcase the best work of new, emerging and established writers and to raise the profile of the short story among writers, readers and the publishing industry.

The judge for the inaugural competition will be Bournemouth-based award-winning writer Nell Leyshon.

An additional prize will be awarded for the highest placed writer resident in Bournemouth.

Writers who are selected for any of the awards will have their work included in an anthology to be published later in 2009.

Send stories on any topic and up to 3,000 words long by March 31st 2009.

The first prize winner will be awarded £100. The second prize winner will receive £75 and the third will receive £50. In addition there will be five supplementary prizes of £25 each, plus The Bournemouth Award of £50 for the highest placed writer resident in Bournemouth.

The entry fee is £5 per story. You can send as many entries as you like.

Full rules and entry details can be found at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/residents/arts
