Brand magazine review

Brand magazine
More of a journal than a magazine, this is a feast of fiction, perfect to gorge yourself on during tedious train journeys or sleepy Sunday afternoons.
Published only twice a year by the University of Greenwich in London, the magazine attracts far more submissions that it can publish, and as well as editor in chief Nina Rapi, Brand has a team of contributing editors who all have a say in the final selection.
The resulting anthology hangs together flawlessly, as each story, poem, scripts and pocket of prose feels lifted from a private journal, with the artwork dotted throughout providing the same sense of rawness.
As readers we soak up the writers’ emotions, but not necessarily their meaning – out of context we can’t always be sure what the works are about. Despite, or perhaps because of this they have the power to move us – to unsettle us.
The words are spare and uncluttered, capturing moments of fragile beauty without the need for blowsy descriptions. Characters are caught with a few deft lines, and we’re left wanting more. It’s inspiring to see how much these writers achieve with so little, almost as though each word is carefully rationed, ensuring that not a single one is wasted.
At present the magazine doesn’t pay for submission, though they hope to begin rewarding their writers with more than the pleasure and prestige of publication soon.
Send submissions (four copies of each poem; three of each play; two of each story/creative non-fiction) to BRAND Submissions, King William Court, University of Greenwich, 30 Park Row, London SE10 9LS UK.
