The Bristol Poetry Festival 2009 will be held from September 3rd to 13th, with events erupting throughout the city and clustered around the Arnolfini Arts Centre.

The opening night on September 3rd offers an opportunity for poets of all levels of experience to take to the mic and share their writing at Bristol Central Library, College Green, Bristol. You’re invited to bring a poem to read or simply come along to enjoy the poetry.

On the same day you can indulge your love of words at the Why We Love Poetry Exhibition at the Arnolfini, where 10 of the best poets writing for young people in the UK will be displaying poems visual and auditory works.

With the aim of getting younger readers interested in poetry, the organisers are inviting you to get as involved as you like by creating your own poems and to decorate badges to wear, or leave hanging on the Poet-Tree… or just come and meet the friendly poets. There are also family workshops to join in with throughout the weekend.

Inspiring and brain-boggling highlights will include musical and spoken performances with discussions and readings by poets and writers such as Catherine Smith, Fleur Adcock, Tony Benn and Roy Bailey.

We’re particularly looking forward to the book launch of Lucy English and Sally Mundy’s Why I’m Here poetry and photography collaboration at the Arnolfini Bookshop on September 13th, and the various poetry slams, including the internationally ambitious Skype-fuelled Bristol Poetry Festival vs Melbourne Poetry Festival event on September 12th.

Tickets are available from the Arnolfini box office by calling 0117 917 2300/01 or by emailing boxoffice@arnolfini.org.uk
