Reach for the stars this December with creative writing competitions

With just over two weeks till the end of 2010, we’ve investigated the best of the writing competitions with deadlines of December 31st 2009, giving you just enough time to polish up and submit your favourite original poem, short story, novel, flash fiction or script. In most cases the prize is publication in an anthology or cold hard cash, both of which would go down well for 2010!
Novel writing competition
New publishing company Red Telephone Books it calling for submissions for their 2009 novel writing competition. The winning novel will be published by Red Telephone Books during 2010, and the prize includes editing, design, marketing and distribution, with royalties being paid annually.
The second prize is a complimentary in-depth editorial report on your submission, and third prize is a general critique of your submission.
Submissions may be in any genre. The entry fee is £10 per submission.

Poetry competition
The First Annual James Kirkup Memorial Poetry Competition invites submissions of poems in any style, of any length, on any subject.
Entries will be judged by Terry Kelly, Tom Kelly and Alistair Robinson, with the writer of the winning poem receiving the first prize of publication of their poetry collection in a pamphlet.
They will also select 24 other finalists to be published in a pamphlet anthology
Entry is free, but you may enter only once.

Poetry and Writing Contest
Dream Quest One are offering opportunities for poets and short story writers with their poetry and writing competition.
The first prize for the poetry contest is $250, with $125 for second place and $50 for third place.
The first place for the writing contest is $500, while the second prize winner will receive $250, and the third prizewinner will win $100. The entry fee is $10.
The competition organisers say: “The mission of Dream Quest One Poetry & Writing Contest is to inspire, motivate and encourage anyone who has the desire or love of poetry and writing, to continue doing so without the fear of failure or success!”

TV scriptwriting competition
With an emphasis on script development, The Sitcom Mission is looking for 15-minute, stageable sitcom scripts. The best of them will be workshopped with actors and directors, and the top 16 will go through to the knock-out contest in front of a public audience and showcased for the industry at a central London venue in Spring 2010, with industry judges deciding which sitcoms will go through to the Grand Final.

Short story writing competitions
Meridian Writing Short Story Competition is inviting entries of short stories up to 3,000 words long. The writing contest is open to new and published writers and offers prizes of £100, £50 and £25 plus firstwriter.com vouchers.
The entry fee £5 per story.

Storyshorts is accepting entries of short stories up to 5,000 words long with a surprise ending for their Story with a Twist feature. The entry fee is £6. The first prize is £175, second prize is £80, with three runner-up prizes of £25. Details can be found at www.storyshorts.co.uk
WriteVoice 2009 Winter Story Competition is seeking long short stories up to 7,000 words.
The entry fee is £7 with prizes of £250, £100 and£25.
WriteVoice are also hosting a Flash Fiction Competition with a word limit of 750. The entry fee is £7 with prizes of £150, £50 and £25.
