Whenever we try to describe an event in fiction, we’re encouraged to employ as many senses as possible to make it come alive, but have you ever challenged yourself to limit your senses to touch, taste and smell? The Sense creative writing competition, Express Yourself, invites you to do just that.

Sense is the UK’s leading charity supporting children and adults who are deafblind, and their writing competition endeavours to demonstrate that deafblind people can experience life as richly as any seeing, hearing person.

Organiser Colin Anderson says: “
Do you feel you have something to say? Would you like to bring your thoughts and ideas to a wider audience? Are you looking for an outlet for your creative talents? We welcome any type of writing: life stories, poetry, humour, thriller, romance, political - whatever floats your boat!”

The deadline for the creative writing contest has been extended to 19 December 19th 2009, giving you plenty of time to imagine yourself into a different perception of the world, or to come up with a fresh, new idea.

Sense creative writing competition prizes

Prizes will be awarded in five categories: the best pieces of writing by a deafblind child or young person; a deafblind adult; a carer or family member (including siblings and grandparents); any individual on the subject of deafblindness.

There is also an award for the best creative piece presented in British Sign Language, with submissions made on video or DVD.

Each winner will receive a prize of £100 and the publication of their winning piece, or part of it, in the Winter 2009 issue of Talking Sense, the charity’s tri-annual magazine. In addition, the winning entries will be added to the `Life Stories’ section of Sense’s new library. This is a growing collection of creative work produced by deafblind people and on the subject of deafblindness.

How to enter the Sense creative writing competition

Written entries will be accepted in Welsh as well as English and can be any lenth. Though there is no entry fee you’re welcome to donate a sum of your choice to Sense.

This is a bright idea as Jilly Cooper always advises don’t write about grass, put emerald green grass. It helps to emphasise your point. I always try to follow this colourful detail.
