Louise Cooper

Louise Cooper (1952-2009) was one of Britain’s finest authors of fantasy fiction. For several years, she was also a visiting lecturer and project tutor on the MA Professional Writing course at University College Falmouth.

In memory of Louise, the student-run writing website Bloc Online has launched its first annual Louise Cooper Fantasy Writing Competition. Entrants are invited to submit either a short story or an extract from a longer work of fantasy fiction, aimed at either adults or younger readers. The word count for entries is 2,500.

The winner will have their story published on the Bloc website; and will also receive a complete set of Louise Cooper’s Time Master and Star Shadow trilogies.

Emily Thomas, Publisher of Young Adult Fiction for Hodder Children’s Books and Louise’s editor will judge the competition.

Bloc Online is a website that runs writing competitions to showcase new writing talent. Based at University College Falmouth, Bloc is the brainchild of the students on the MA Professional Writing course.

Louise was an extraordinarily insightful and generous teacher, and her loss was felt keenly both by staff on the course and former students who had been lucky enough to be tutored by her and this competition was created in her honour.

The deadline for entry to the competition is July 17th 2010 and the winner will be announced six weeks after the closing date.
