Hi,

A brief note to say that we have decided to drop the registration fee for author publication on the site. We came to this following feedback and attending informative events at the Edinburgh Book Festival. Full details can be found in our Essential Writers blog.

Warmest regards,

Hi,

I am new to this forum, and must complement Essential Writers and particularly Judy Darley for this website and the free blog option. I'm posting this thread in order to talk about an e-publishing project that I have developed and launched with my family.

We launched our business in September 2009 and have since been developing our website http://www.booksanctuary.co.uk. The principle behind the business is to be an eBook publisher that focuses its energies on promoting new writing, and particularly supporting previously unpublished writers. We want to utilise the social networks of the internet, such as discussion forums, Twitter, Facebook, MSN Messaging, to enable Book Sanctuary to be a hub for literary debate and a platform for writers to sell their work.

Our website has a lot of content and information: a variety of informative articles, a forum, a Twitter account, and a Facebook page. The Book Store will launch soon with some exciting new writing and everyone who registers on the site will receive a free copy of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (courtesy of Gutenberg.org) by email, in pdf, ePub and Kindle compatible mobi formats, adapted and formatted by the Book Sanctuary Team. Authors’ profiles, surveys, and social networking events (such as online chats) will follow soon. In the future, the website will also publish an e-zine, progressing into a journal, the contributors of which it is hoped will be you, the online community.

Although this is a business, my personal goal is to ensure that pricing on Book Sanctuary is structured to remove any financial risk to the prospective writer while setting affordable prices on the eBooks to attract readers to try new writing. A typical eBook on the site will cost around £4.00; pricing will be scalable to accommodate for short stories and poetry. The mission of this project is to drive this opportunity for new and unpublished writers, with the online community being able to share their writing, without high setup costs and monthly subscriptions.

In order to build the collection of writing on Book Sanctuary, the submissions process is structured to attract a broad range of exciting writing and to allow the author the correct platform and pricing to share their work. If publication is agreed, the writer would pay a registration fee to cover the costs of converting files and general maintenance of the website. The author's registration fee will be £20; there is potential for a scalable fee for articles such as individual short stories. Future submitted publications will be at a reduced rate of £15. This fee covers the conversion of the book into three formats; pdf, ePub and Kindle ready mobi. This registration not only covers the file conversion but also the upload and hosting of the eBook in the store. There will not be any additional monthly charges to be met by the author. We will also have an in-house proofreader who can provide a proofreading service for an additional but highly competitive fee. Writers will receive 50% net profit as royalty on their writing, and most importantly retain intellectual property rights to their work at all times.

I would be delighted if you could have a look at http://www.booksanctuary.co.uk and let us know what you think. You can also register for free, giving you access to post on our forum and receive your free eBook by email. In addition we are, of course, looking for submissions that will be the first batch of publications on Book Sanctuary. You can see details on the process for submissions here, and you can email questions or articles to submissions@booksanctuary.co.uk.

There are three email addresses below: my personal address, our enquiries address, and most importantly the submissions address. We also have an Essential Writers blog, http://booksanctuary.essentialwriters.com/, which will also be updated frequently.

Kindest regards,

I try not to do that, with short stories or feature ideas. Instead i have a collection of about 10 of each that are constantly doing the rounds, being re-assessed after each rejection (or worse, non-reply). I think it would be awful to have two magazines sy they'd like to publish your work, and then have to turn one down!

I'm not familiar with submitting articles, but I am with short stories. The submission page on a publisher's website almost always tells you if they allow simultaneous submissions, [the same story sent to more than one publisher]. If you can't see anything saying they don't allow sim. subs. then, I'd just go ahead and submit it to as many publishers as you want, because it's the publishers responsibility to present their submission rules correctly.
On how long you wait if your work is tied up with one publisher, is a decision each of us has to make, as Fran says. Submitting stories and everything connected with it is what I call the admin. side of a writer's work. Well, you don't want to let the admin. get on top of you, so just keep writing, and submitting.
Becca.

This is just my experience. I think if it's a short story or article, you shouldn't send it to duplicate publications. One of the main reasons for this is that everything you write should be targeted at a certain audience after studying the publication you are aiming at. People vary on how long to wait before sending elsewhere. That's trickier. Just keep sending things out, and then you're not always in that 'hanging on' state which is always so painful and requires acres of chocolate to be soothed.

If you are submitting a short story or an article, do you submit it to multiple places at the same time? If you only submit to one place, and if they do not give you a reply, how long do you wait before submitting it somewhere else?

The worst rejection I've had is an email which just said 'no thanks'. Not even a comma between no and thanks. I wasn't even WORTH a comma. Decided I wouldn't want to be edited by him anyway.

My New Year's resolution for 2010 is to send out at least one feature pitch or story submission every single week. Being trapped at home in the snow really helped – I sent out nine feature ideas last Monday! Now I just need one to come good...

Woohoo! I just had my first feature commission come through from a mag I've been trying to get in with for ages. How's that for a great way to begin 2010!

It's hard going when you get endless rejections, but the occasional commission keeps me going! Last month I contacted fourteen mags I'd never written for before. Eight ignored me completely, five said 'thanks but no thanks', and one said they liked my idea and gave me a deadline of Dec 7th. Magic!

I try to make sure I send out a least one short story every couple of weeks - the way I look at it, that's around 24 submissions a year. Actually, that doesn't sound that many, perhaps I should start sending more!
