I am Tevan Savage and I run multiple websites that are in need of writers. The sites have been moved from WordPress.com to Blogger, so the audience is still rebuilding, but my schedule is taking me farther and farther away from my websites and I have taken to Essential Writers in search of writers that will work for little pay.

My company is behind several sites, one is a hip hop site that needs the news and stories written in a professional manner. The other is a black entertainment website, again with articles written in a professional manner. I also have a website dedicated to basketball and I will still be writing for all of these websites.

I've just read the post about the Wergle Flomp poetry comp and I wondered how you're supposed to figure out which competitions are legit and which are just ways for the organisers to get your details so they can bombard you with advertising. I was considering entering the Academy of Childrens' Writers' children's short story competition, but couldn't find any details on previous winners, which seemed a bit weird. They claim to offer a first prize of £2,000, which made me suspicious too, especially as the entry fee is only £2.70, and they ask for it to be entirely in the form of 2nd class stamps - presumably so they can afford the postage of the junk mail they'll then send you. They also specify that they want your name and address on the entry, which seems unusual. Ah, I think I've answered my own question, but what does everyone else think?

Hi all,

I am writing an article on foot care and wondered if any of you might be able to provide me with any leads?
I need women who have had foot problems and have either:
- Found regular exercise has helped foot problems
- Found a regular foot care routine (possibly including regular visits to the chiropodist/podiatrist) that works for them

The piece is for a women's lifestyle magazine and would involve a ten minute phone interview. If you can relate to the above - or can put me in touch with someone who can - please get in touch. Any help/suggestions hugely appreciated!!

Cheers,

I have been to the greek islands a fair bit and know that they all differ vastly. Personal favourites of mine have been Paros, Paxos, Folegandros and Symi. My other half is a writer in desperate need of a spring holiday on an island where he can relax and do plenty of writing. A simple cottage by the water and plenty of walks, nice villages, tavernas, friendly locals etc. http://summerwritingretreat.com/

Hello lovely EW readers and writers... I have just finished the first draft of my book proposal but envisage many more drafts before I get it 200% spot on!
Now, the problem which seems to have developed is the unsuitability of my up-till-now writing space. I live in a flat in north west London and you know what I would love?
A room with a view over looking countryside. In other words space to get my creative juices flowing. Because right now, my moments of inspiration are being interrupted by thoughts of "hmm.. really must get that curtain rail fixed etc etc!"

My novel The Qliphoth was released by Libros Libertad, a Canadian indie publisher in 2007.

http://www.libroslibertad.ca/book.php?id=2

They currently hold all rights and we've had some very limited POD distribution in the UK. It would make sense for both LL and myself to sell UK rights to a UK publisher who had a larger budget to package and promote the book over here.

Doubtless people will tell me that an agent should do this, but I'm currently agent-less. Has anybody on the list succeeded in negotiating rights themselves? Or are there any friendly agents reading this..?

Hello there ~ I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me. I am about to finish my book proposal and send it to a publisher who is waiting for it. But what is stopping the publisher from saying 'no' and then giving my idea and notes to an established author who they know will sell?
I think I am being a little bit over cautious (& probably hopeful) but this is something so close to my heart...

Thanks so much in advance, Natasha

Most of us have a magazine or two that epitomises our teen years – I veered between More and Kerrang! Oh, the glamour of one vs the anti-glamour of the other, the hot uber-plucked hunks of More's central pages vs the straggly bearded manoliths (ooh, I think I've just coined a new word) of Kerrang!, the veneer of coolness, the, um, dubious sex tips, of both. *sigh*
What magazines best represents your teen years?

Receiving rejections seems to be part of the writer's job, but that doesn't make it any less painful. I try to make sure I always have a project in progress so that while a feature, story or synopsis is out there in the world of submissions being battered by editors and agents, another is quietly maturing and getting stronger, ready to take over as soon as the first one needs a rest! How do you deal with it?

I just had a query from one of our members asking how you can add a picture to your profile, so I thought I'd share the answer.

The best method is to sign up to Gravatar - http://www.gravatar.com.

If you sign up using the same email address as you registered under on EssentialWriters.com, then your image should be magically be displayed on EssentialWriters.com, and any other website you signed up to under that email address.

Alternatively, once you're logged in to EssentialWriters.com, click on Profile in the top right-hand corner of the screen. If you scroll to the bottom of the Profile page, you'll find a browse button for you to use to upload an image of yourself.

Let me know if you have any problems.

I’ve noticed that a few of you have set up blogs on EssentialWriters.com, which is great. There are a few tweaks you can make to get more out of your blog, however.

If you go to your admin page and click on settings, you will be able to amend your blog title and add a tagline to give people an idea of what your blog is about.

If you click on Write, then Page, you can scroll down to page parent and select About. This gives you the opportunity to provide some information on yourself, rather than having standard text in this section.

If you are adding a blog entry, you can include an image by clicking on the fuzzy dot next to Add Media. SXC.hu has a great supply of free images - just make sure you add the relevant credits when you upload them.

If there's anything else you need to know, get in touch!

Happy (belated) New Year! Just wondering what everyone's writing goals are for 2009. I plan to submit more features to the magazines I really admire - by the end of 2009 I want to be able to pick up a copy of NME and see my byline in print! Local rags just won't cut it any more!
