Hello lovely EW readers and writers... I have just finished the first draft of my book proposal but envisage many more drafts before I get it 200% spot on!
Now, the problem which seems to have developed is the unsuitability of my up-till-now writing space. I live in a flat in north west London and you know what I would love?
A room with a view over looking countryside. In other words space to get my creative juices flowing. Because right now, my moments of inspiration are being interrupted by thoughts of "hmm.. really must get that curtain rail fixed etc etc!"

A room with a view ~ how can I get to one at weekends to write in peace?

I know exactly what you mean, and I have a toddler which makes it even more challenging! Even when my husband is supposed to be taking care of her so I can write all I can think about is the noise she's making and why she's making it! Usually I grab my laptop and escape to a cafe with wifi, or a cafe without, because often twitter and facebook are just as distracting as my child! It suits me better than renting somewhere - for the price of a cup of coffee you get warmth, heat, light... oh, and gentle hum of background noise.

Hey, someone else who likes background noise! I just find it so difficult to work in silence, but as soon as I take either my writing (or my endless English teacher marking) to a pub or a cafe, I can concentrate for hours. No one else seems to understand me!

You're not alone, Ceramics, I feel exactly the same. Too much quiet makes my imagination stagnant - I need some buzz to make the words come out.

close down the browser, crank up the spotify, put the headphones on and get tapping.

I understand total silence. The slightest noise distracts me to no end. --- If anyone actually knows of a rentable location, anywhere in the world, please seriously, please notify me... hallett.steve@gmail.com... Thanks!

Hi Steve, in A Book of Silence, Sara Maitland writes about spending 40 isolated, silent days and nights at a cottage called Allt Dearg on Skye, and refers in her notes to the website http://www.drynoch.demon.co.uk which has full details on how to book the cottage. Worth a look.

Thanks Judy for your suggestion. -- Interestinly enough, last week I started to read Sara Maitland's, "A Book of Silence". Her qwest for silence is proving to be extremely motivating. -- I continue to seek a location where silence predominates. Anyone with specific and detailed location suggestions - anywhere in the world - would be most welcome. -- hallett.steve@gmail.com .
