Writing residences - pay or be paid?

Has anyone else ever had the experience of being invited to become writer in residence of a venue and then being asked to pay for the privilege?

That sounds like a scam to me, Judy. Don't do it!
I've heard of writers being paid to be in residence, and I've heard of them doing it voluntarily but never of someone being charged to do it.

I agree. They don't seem to understand the value of a writer in residence. Do you really want to be involved with a company like that?
