Frome Festival invites us to see what writers in residence actually do

Tim Bates, writer in residence
The annual Frome Festival runs from July 3rd to 12th 2009, welcoming a large range of literary, musical and artistic events to the town in Somerset.
One of the highlights this year will be the Writers in Residence event, to be held on Saturday, 4th July, from 10am until 2pm.
Creative Director Martin Dimery says: “Ever wondered where writers get their inspiration? Now’s your chance to find out! Watch Frome’s creative talent at work as they write against the clock in the town’s shops and cafes.”
Participating creative writers have been given a theme or first line to work from, before taking up residence in shops located around Frome’s town centre.
In previous years, the shops and cafés of Catherine Hill and Cheap Street have inspired some great poems and short stories, and the organisers are confident that this year’s event will be better than ever.
Author Lindsay Clarke will select the winning writer.
Writing courses and workshops
To keep the creativity threading through the town centre, the Hat Box Poets will be proclaiming their carefully chosen words at 10am, 11am, 12noon, 1pm and 2pm, while Story Box workshops will set children’s imaginations alight at Frome Library using art, drama, music and mime.
Workshops for adults include How To Get Published, with Maria McCarthy, Writing Romantic Comedies, with best-selling novelist Debbie Holt, and A Screenwriters Workshop, with David Lassman.
As in previous years the library is at the heart of the literary events, hosting a range of workshops and talks, especially on for the Writers and Publishers Day on Sunday 5th July.
“Throughout the day there’s advice on every aspect of writing from poetry to screenplay,” says Martin Dimery. “We’re especially pleased to welcome Barry Cunningham from lively new children’s publishing company The Chicken House – the man who pulled Harry Potter off the slush pile! - with editor Imogen Cooper and Rachel Ward, author of Numbers, shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.”
