Natasha Smith of In the Write Light explains why Tarifa is the perfect place unleash your creativity

In the Write Light
In the fifth part of our series of features on writing courses overseas, we talk to Natasha Smith, who left her home in Ireland to run In the Write Light creative writing courses in Tarifa on Spain’s Costa de la Luz, the Coast of Light. She explains why she believes this location is so important to writers seeking inspiration.
What made you decide to set up a creative holiday centre abroad?
Tarifa’s location, history and culture attract an eclectic mix of artists, travellers and sports fanatics making it a vibrant and ever-changing chic hotspot. However, it also possesses an enigmatic laid-back boho atmosphere.
For me, these two contrasting elements made Tarifa perfect as a creative holiday destination. it offered both relaxation and inspiration, brilliant weather and raw landscape, trendy visitors and charismatic locals.
As a budding fiction writer myself, I am fully aware of the need to supplement your income in whatever way possible. Starting a creative writing centre allowed me to put both by business acumen and love of writing to good practice. I already had a lot of contacts on the Irish literary scene, and from there it was a natural progression.
Have you ever run a similar kind of thing in Ireland?
No, I have been to many workshops in Ireland though and there is no comparison. My workshops are holidays as well as an opportunity to learn. my students have the benefit of world class teachers in a world class holiday destination so the best of both worlds!
Why did you choose Spain for the location of your cultural centre?
I had been living in Spain for a long time so the choice was a natural one. but really it was Tarifa that inspired me to believe it could be possible. I sell the workshops, but Tarifa sells itself.
Creative holidays are hugely popular in Spain because of the ease of getting to various parts of the country, the relatively cheaper cost, the local hospitality, food and culture. Spain is first and foremost a holiday destination. Countries don’t come much more relaxed that Spain and this definitely helps those looking to unwind and get creative.
What made you choose Tarifa in particular?
As I said Tarifa is special. It is the meeting point of oceans, continents, nations and cultures. Walking around Tarifa’s old town is to be lost in time. Walking along its beaches is to be overwhelmed by nature’s beauty. I defy anyone to come here and not be inspired to create!
Do you think your location appeals to a particular kind of holidaymaker?
Tarifa definitely appeals to those who are not afraid to go a little off the beaten track, those who have inquisitive minds, like new experiences and value old cultures. Tarifa is a challenge on many levels but also supremely rewarding…
