Mslexia welcomes entries for their second annual Women’s Short Story Competition

As part of its efforts to support of the Save Our Short Story campaign and promote the work of women who write, UK-based quarterly magazine Mslexia is inviting entries for their second annual Women’s Short Story Competition.

The stories may be on any subject, and may be up to 2,200 words in length. There is an entry fee of £8 per story and there is no limit on the number of entries per person. The deadline is January 25th 2010.

Women’s Short Story Competition prizes

Bestselling novelist Tracy Chevalier will be judging the creative writing competition and will select a winner to receive a top prize of £2,000, as well as a week’s writing retreat at Chawton House Library (accommodation only) and a day with a Virago editor. In addition there will be a second prize of £500, a third prize of £250 and three other finalists who will receive £100 each.

The competition aims to provides a professional showcase for both established and emerging women writers, and all six winning entries will be published in the spring issue of Mslexia.

Tracy is the author of six novels, including Remarkable Creatures, Burning Bright, and the international bestseller Girl With a Pearl Earring. Previously she has judged the Bridport Short Story Prize and the Jewish Quarterly Prize, and has been Chair of the Society of Authors.

She says: “I am delighted to be judging the Mslexia Short Story Competition. I started my writing life with short stories, and know how hard it is to get them right. They require a sensitive eye and an economical way with words. If you pull it off, you have really accomplished something. I am hoping I will be dazzled, amused and amazed by the submissions!”
