Now in its 32nd year, the National Poetry Competition 2009 run by the Poetry Society provides an opportunity for both emerging and established poets to get their talent noticed. While the financial rewards are nothing to be sniffed at, the bigger prize may be the chance to have your work published in the leading international journal of contemporary poetry, Poetry Review, as well as in Aesthetica magazine.
The writing award has helped launch the careers of many of the world’s most renowned poets, including UK poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, and award judges Ruth Padel and Neil Rollinson.
When asked what effect the writing award has on a writer, Ruth says: “Incalculable, I’d say. Not just the attention it gives your work, but the sense that they liked this poem anonymously, out of thousands. Above all, it gives you belief in your own work.”
