Optimism in the print media for 2009

As print media companies struggled financially during 2008, the by-words have been downsizing, mergers, and most terrifying, lay-offs, terminations, closures, redundancies… According to the Wall Street Journal, two million jobs were lost in the USA in 2008.
But, as some sunny soul pointed out, this could be a blessing in disguise. Not necessarily for the poor peeps waving goodbye to their last shred of security, but for the media industry itself.
The last decade has been a time of immense expansion for many publishing houses, with new magazines appearing on already groaning supermarket shelves with each passing month. Each passing year has also seem the appearance of hopeful new publishers arriving on the scene, making this one of the most over-crowded professions available.
With every man, woman and dog deciding they have what it takes to be a writer, perhaps the recent crises will weed out the wannabes from the driven, the ‘quite fancy being a writer’ from the ‘gotta write or I’ll die.’
With all the dregs washed away by the tidal wave no one quite dares to call a recession, perhaps it’s time for talent to shine, as we look forward optimistically to a brighter 2009.
