Pitlochry Festival Theatre seeks entries of gruesome fearie tales

From trolls beneath bridges to eerie enchanted forests, the best fairy tales seem to feature anything but fairies, and many of them seem far too dark for children. If you fancy stretching your creative powers to write a truly splendid and possibly utterly grisly story, Pitlochry Festival Theatre want to hear from you.
Back for a fourth time, this unique competition receives more submissions each year, from both would-be authors and more established writers. The format is simple, as they choose two or three entries (occasionally four, if they`re short) to be read aloud by two familiar faces from the Pitlochry stage in the cosy atmosphere of the Ben-y-Vrackie Bar each Friday and Saturday evening during the Winter Words Festival.
Every Fearie Tale read must be an original new story, written especially for Winter Words.
How to enter this creative writing competition
Firstly, your competition entry must meet three content requirements:
It must be a Fearie Tale, which the competitions organisers define as ”a tale of the mysterious, the macabre or the supernatural.”
The story must contain an obvious connection with Scotland, such as being by a Scottish author, being set in a Scottish location, having Scottish characters or drawing from Scottish folklore or history.
It must not have been previously published, read or performed in any form whatsoever, including book, newspaper, journal, broadcast media, digital media, website and even blog.
Secondly, your entries must be either typewritten/word processed on A4 paper, using 11 point type or larger, and submitted by post or by hand; OR written as an MS Word document and submitted as an email attachment.
Please note: hand-written entries will not be accepted.
Each entry must be a minimum of 2,000 words in length, up to a maximum length of 3,250 words.
Each entry must show the story’s title and the author’s name, postal address, telephone number and e-mail address (if you have one) on the front page.
No more than one entry per person is permitted.
Postal entries should be sent to Fearie Tales Competition, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Pitlochry, Perthshire PH16 5DR
Email entries should be sent to admin@pitlochry.org.uk with “Fearie Tales Competition” in the subject field of your email.
Entries must be received at Pitlochry Festival Theatre by 12 noon on Friday January 15th 2010. Entries received after this point will not be considered.
The names of the entries and authors that have been selected to be read will be announced on Thursday 21st January 2010. Only the authors of the stories selected by the judges will be contacted; if you don`t hear anything, it means that, sadly, your Fearie Tale has not been chosen.
As always, the judges’ decisions are final.
