The New Writer seeks entries for the Prose and Poetry Prizes 2009

The New Writer is calling for entries of prose and poetry for the annual competition. There are three categories: fiction - for short stories, serials and novellas; poetry - for which you can enter single poems and poetry collections, and non-fiction - accepting entries of essays, articles and interviews.
Suzanne Ruthven, editor of The New Writer, says: “We are looking for bold, original writing in any genre.”
Winning entries will appear in The Collection, the special annual edition of The New Writer magazine. Cash prizes amounting to £2,000 will also be awarded.

Poetry writing
Single poems may be up to 40 lines long, and collections must comprise between six and 10 poems, with no restriction on the length of the poems included.
Entering the writing contest costs £5 for up to two single poems (£4 for subscribers to The New Writer magazine) and £12 per collection.
Fiction writing
Short stories may be up to 4,000 words long and serials and novellas may be up to 20,000 words long. They may be on any subject or theme and in any genre apart from children’s. Entering the writing contest costs £5 per short story (£5 for TWO stories from subscribers to The New Writer magazine), and £15 per serial or novella.
Non-fiction writing
Essays, articles and interviews may be up to 2,000 words long. The entries may cover any writing-related or literary theme in its wider sense. Entering the writing contest costs £5 per item (£5 for TWO entries from subscribers to The New Writer magazine).
No entries may have been previously published apart from individual poems included in the collections.
The best short story, best serial or novella and best poetry collection will win £300, while the best single poem will win £100 and the best article, interview or essay will win £150. There are also cash prizes for entries placed in second and third place.
The closing date for the writing competitions is November 30th 2009.
