Screenwriters offered training opportunities in the Midlands

Claire Ingham
Forging a career as a writer requires drive, determination and a certain degree of staying power. Script, the regional development agency for dramatic writers in the West Midlands, is aiming to help emerging writers to overcome the challenges they face with tenacity a new targeted workshop programme.
tenacity is designed to support writers along that path, to challenge pre-conceptions of the industry and to identify talented writers in the West Midlands who would benefit from further development.
Delivered across the Midlands region, tenacity will draw on the experience of professional playwrights, screenwriters, producers and theatre practitioners, to offer a unique focus on the creative process. Tying into local productions of new work wherever possible, the workshops will give writers the chance to learn new skills and ways of working in a practical, dynamic environment.
All screen tenacity workshops are led by producer and film and television script developer Claire Ingham. She works on projects at all stages of development - currently ranging from the adaptation treatment of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling novel The Wishlist to the final draft of Helen Cross’ original feature Stratford Road - to a number of original drama series and serials for the BBC and Channel 4.
Writing courses
Upcoming writing courses include Independence Day: Writing for British Film. Taking place at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Saturday July 4th 2009, the scriptwriting workshop will examine what kinds of feature and short films are being made and financed in the UK, who’s funding them, who’s making them, and how a writer can get a foot on the UK film ladder.
The workshop will give information on financiers, agents, writing schemes, and how to gain access to development funding, commissioners and producers. The day will also include a session with Screen West Midlands Production and Development Executive, Dan Lawson.
Other writing courses in the series include Character Incubation: Finding Your Voice, led by storyteller led by Malika Booker on Saturday 18th July 2009 at Repertory Theatre, and Visual Imapact:Writing for the Screen, with award-winning novelist and screenwriter, Helen Cross on Saturday July 25th in Bromsgrove.
Each of the one-day writing courses costs from £45 to attend.
