With Tom Ford’s exquisite A Single Man and Sam Taylor-Wood’s Nowhere Boy proving that successful films spring from all sorts of minds, 2010 could be a good year for exploring your potential as a screenwriter.
This March you’ll have the opportunity to learn some key screenwriting skills when top US Script Consultant Julie Gray comes to the UK to teach her Warner Brothers workshop ‘From Idea to the Screen to the Page: Fearless Writing for the Passionate Screenwriter.’
Julie Gray has some impressive credentials as the founder of Hollywood script coverage service The Script Department and a regular lecturer at Warner Bros, The Great American PitchFest, The Creative Screenwriting Expo and San Francisco University in Quito, Ecuador.
For the first time, Julie is allowing British writers in get in on the action without forking out for plane fare, and will lead the writing workshop in London on the weekend of March 6th and 7th, and in Oxford for the weekend of March 13th and 14th.
The scriptwriting workshops return to the USA with sessions in Chicago on April 17th and 18th, in Los Angeles on April 23rd April and 24th, in San Francisco for May 1st and 2nd.
Julie describes her two-day workshops as “fun, participatory and designed to help aspiring screenwriters learn the tools necessary to not only test ideas for originality but also to outline effectively and write unforgettable characters.”
Writers will participate in brainstorming exercises, learn about writing cinematically, and, she adds, “come away recharged, inspired and armed to write awesome pages.”
The second day focuses on strategies for breaking into Hollywood, teaching you to sell both your writing and yourself through role-playing and practice-pitching.
“We’ll discuss agents, managers, competitions, queries and the art of pitching. Role-playing and practice pitching in a supportive environment will help you gain the confidence you need to build your career AND the professionalism, playfulness and fresh perspective you need to stay sane and happy while doing so.”
Even Richard Curtis started somewhere and he didn’t have Julie’s workshops to help him.
