If you yearn to become a screenwriter, the ‘Sequel to Cannes’ Short Film Script Competition 2009 is your chance to have your work critiqued by some of the best writers in the industry, and perhaps even win a prize.

The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 living in Great Britain (including the Channel Islands, Northern Ireland and Eire) at a cost of £20 per script entry. The closing date is Wednesday November 25th 2009.

There’s a 1st prize of £500 cash (sponsored by Creative Dorset) and 2nd and third prizes of £75 and £25 respectively.

To be eligible, your script must be no more than ten pages long and must bear no reference to your name or contact details, with the name of the script visible in a header or footer. You should also include a flysheet containing your contact details, the name of your script and the title of the short film only, plus a one-page synopsis and a logline or word count.

The script should feature a maximum of four main characters and be set in an identifiable place of natural beauty, or a building, urban setting, club, bar or pub in Dorset. It may be in any genre.

In return for your entry fee you will receive a bullet point feedback sheet on your script by a top industry script reader. This year’s Patron of the Script Prize is television, radio and film screenwriter and author Jeremy Paul.

Over the years Jeremy has played an important part in shaping Television into what it is today, with prolific contribution to shows such as Lovejoy, Midsomer Murders, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Hetty Wainthrope as well as some of the original series of The Duchess of Duke Street, Upstairs Downstairs and many more series and films. In addition he has written extensively for radio and stage.

You may also opt in for a second reading of your script by Level Film production company who are actively seeking to work with a writer, with the sole aim of making a short film for festival entry. While there is no guarantee that any of the scripts will match their interests, if they do, the production company is very keen to progress this script and develop it into a film.

All top ten short listed authors will receive a free ticket to either a Prequel to Cannes or Sequel to Cannes event taking place in 2010, and 20 further entrants will be drawn at random to receive a VIP invite to attend either of the 2010 Prequel or Sequel to Cannes film networking parties in Poole, Dorset.
