Stories for Children Magazine is inviting writers to send non-fiction works about incredible events and happenings for their new annual Amazing But True contest.
“There has always been an enchantment about reading a good children’s story,” says founder and editor in chef VS Grenier. “Children take pleasure in having a story read to them anytime or anywhere – whether it be around a campfire, under a starry night, in their beds wrapped up tight in snuggly blankets, beneath a shady tree on a hot summer’s day, or in front of a roaring fireplace on a cold winter’s day.”
Stories for Children Magazine is a free Ezine that was designed to unlock children’s imagination and take them on an exciting adventure. Each monthly issue is loaded with fun stories and articles based on age-appropriate reading levels. There are also puzzles, games, children’s book reviews, crafts, and poems to inspire the imagination.
Children’s authors or illustrators are also known to stop by, hoping to make new friends along their journey into the World of Ink.
To become a part of this journey, choose between the age groups of three to six, seven to nine and ten to 12, and remember the event or story has to be true and for children, which means no sexual content, violence, or anything related to drugs.
Remember that each age group is at a different stage in development and curiosity, with the three to six age group focusing on the subject of discovery, and learning about the world around them. Entries in this category should be from150 to 400 words long. Entries for the seven to nine age group should focus on understanding the how and why of things, and should be between 400 and 800 words long.
The ten to 12 age group should be written with the thought that at this age children are covering the basics and digging deeper for a better understanding of their world at this age, and should be between 500 and 1,200 words long.
Submissions will be accepted until July 30th 2009. The fee is $10, which needs to be paid via PayPal. After you make your payment, click on the “Return to Stories for Children Publishing” button to be taken to the Amazing But True Submission Page. If you don’t see this page, you can email your contest entry to SFCcontests@StoriesForChildrenMagazine.org as a Word.doc attachment with “Amazing But True Contest Submission” in the subject line. In the body of the email please state the title of your entry and PayPal Transaction number so they can match your payment with the entry. The contest is open to any writer aged 18 or older.
Your name, contact information, word count, and date of submission should be in the top right-hand corner of your entry. Your title should be one-third of the way down the first page, with your byline directly underneath the title.
If you are using a pen name, please indicate this in brackets. Use only Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font. All submissions must be single-spaced with a blank line to indicate paragraphs and no indentations.
The best entry for each age group category will be published in the following months:
Ages 3-6 winner: September issue of Stories for Children
Ages 7-9 winner: October issue of Stories for Children
Ages 10-12 winner: November issue of Stories for Children
