There’s more to Swindon than you might think, with the town’s streets and buildings harbouring a surprising number of poets, short story writers and general heralds of imaginative stirrings.

The festival begins at sunrise on the ridge in Lawn Woods, overlooking Swindon, on Spring Bank Holiday Monday May 3rd and runs until May 15th 2010.

If you’re able to get there for 5.30am you’ll experience the Dawn Chorus, where literature-loving early risers will gather with Spring songs, sunrise stories, high-wire acts, verbal and physical acrobatics, music, Maypole dancing, hot breakfasts, and other magical mischief.

Speakers appearing at more reasonable hours during the festival will include poets Carol Ann Duffy and Daljit Nagra, novelists Lionel Shriver and Barbara Trapido, Maureen Lipman, scientists Steve Jones and Anil Ananthaswamy, plus Cherie Blair, Michael Portillo, and many others.

On May 13th head to the Central Library for an evening of very short stories and ‘cliff hangers’, with the Swindon Speakers reading the first three minutes of five-minute stories, ending each on a cliff-hanger. The audience will then pick who gets to finish their story.

If you want to see how your own writing stands up to the test, you can apply to take part with one of your own stories by phoning 01793 722130 or sending an email to susan.mayer@homecall.co.uk.

Other events to get involved with are the Swindon Performance Poetry Slam competition, Youth Slam, a bookish weekend for Children & Families, a new philosophical Think Slam, as well as films, storytelling and the Poems, Pints, & Music finale on May 15th 2010.
