Tapestry of Bronze invites you to be inspired by Greek and Roman gods for their Fall Poetry Contest
Ancient Greeks and Romans produced some of the most powerful and long-lasting stories ever shared, leaving us with a literary heritage rife with passion, betrayal and dodgy goings-on – influencing genres of fiction as diverse as Shakespearean plays and modern Chick Lit.
To celebrate the wonder of Greek and Roman mythology, Tapestry of Bronze is sponsoring a series of poetry contests, inviting you to write poems inspired by the most glorious characters ever dreamt of.
The star of their latest creative writing contest is the Goddess of the Harvest, known by the Greeks as Demeter, and by the Romans as Ceres. The symbol of Demeter is the poppy of the fields.
All poems remain the property of the authors, though Tapestry of Bronze reserves the right to post winning poems and those receiving Honorable Mentions on the Tapestry of Bronze website.
As an added incentive, there is talk of the poems being set to music, bringing a new dimension to the words.
There is no submission fee, but poems must be no longer than 30 lines.
The first prize winner in each age group - Under 18 and 18 and Over - will receive $50. Honorable Mentions may be awarded as well, but without cash prizes.
The competition organisers Victoria Grossack and Alice Underwood say: “We sponsor this contest because we want to encourage excellence and creativity. We’re using the same method used by the Greeks back in Classical Athens: competition. Instead of olive wreaths, we offer money and certificates for prizes.”
How to enter this poetry competition
Email your poem to tapestryofbronze@yahoo.com, pasted into the body of the email rather than as an attachment. Victoria Grossack and Alice Underwood advise you to keep your formatting as simple as possible as pictures and peculiar fonts may distract and irritate the judges.
Include your real name, and your alias if you have one. If you are entering the contest for those under 18 please include your birthdate; otherwise, simply indicate that you’re an adult.
One final point: “Make sure your poem is about Demeter / Ceres. We received a surprising number of irrelevant poems during the last contest. These are guaranteed to irritate the judges and are all discarded!”
The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2009. To find out more, please visit www.tapestryofbronze.com/OdeForm.html
