The week ahead at EssentialWriters.com

Chetham's Library, Manchester
Welcome to a new week, and plenty of new opportunities to share your words at EssentialWriters.com! At the moment we’re especially keen to get our forums working a bit harder - the whole point of them is for you to ask questions, offer support and opinions, seek feedback and advice and get in touch with other writers. Don’t be shy: start a new thread or join and existing one and let us know what you’ll be writing about this week.
You may have noticed that the job market has gone a bit stagnant following a summer when I for one believed there was a light at the end of the shadowy recession tunnel. Freelance and staff positions were being offered in large numbers of communications companies. Now it’s all gone quiet again - let us know if or how it’s affecting you! Despite this unexpected lull, we’re managed to source a choice role that may just be the job of your dreams.
With that in mind, Hannah Ferguson gives us a candid account of her work as a junior agent at The Marsh Agency, including her own aspirations as an author. Read this post when it goes live on Monday and I promise you’ll feel excited about being a writer, whether you’re published or not.
One of our regular contributors, Melinda Elmore, has read and reviewed The Silent Spirit by Margaret Coel, and has also spent some chatting with the New York Times best-selling author for our EssentialWords section.
These two posts go live on Tuesday, and will offer you an insider’s viewpoint on North America’s thriving Native American Romance and mystery sector. Margaret has a wealth of knowledge on finding agents, publishers and promoting your writing, and generously shares it with Melinda and the rest of us hungry writers.
On Friday I will be posting a travel feature about Manchester to prepare you for the annual literature festival happening there later this month. I spent two days in the once-industrial city this week and was amazed to learn of its many literary connections, with local writers ranging from the likes of Anthony Burgess, author of A Clockwork Orange, to Elizabeth Gaskell who wrote Cranford. I’ll let you know the hotspots to visit, from the restaurants and museums to one of the finest libraries I’ve ever set foot in.
One of the most glorious things about running a website as opposed to a print publication is the power of immediacy, so as always there are also a few other slots to be filled as the week goes on. This luxury hit home yesterday when the BBC alerted us to a new incentive named My Story, which is designed to get the nation writing up true tales to inspire, amuse and educate. The best storytellers will be invited to take part in a TV series next summer, and I can’t wait to see what comes up. It seems like too good an opportunity to miss!
Feel free to get in touch with any feature ideas, reviews or news you’d like to share with our other members, or if you would simply like to be considered for the EssentialWords interview slot - it’s a great way to raise your profile among a broad array of communications professional.
And don’t forget to tell your friends and colleagues about EssentialWriters.com - we’ve always got plenty of room for more writers and word lovers.
