With the weather making us want to hide indoors, this is the perfect season for working on that novel, honing that poem or perfecting that feature pitch. Wherever your writing allegiance lies, snuggle up in your favourite armchair with your laptop and pay a visit to EssentialWriters.com. We’re got plenty to keep you inspired, from job news to competitions and interviews.

One of the most exciting stories of the season came up yesterday with news of Stephen King’s latest novel being launched with an epic game of hide and seek. The clues and novel fragments are already out there, so get searching if you want to complete the challenge by the deadline of November 6th.

If you love computer games and are looking to work for one of the longest-running magazines in that sector, click on the Jobs etc tab on Monday to discover a dream job.

On Tuesday you’ll be able to read a review of Sara Maitland’s A Book of Silence, a particularly poignant topic for writers. We deal so much with words that perhaps we’re never truly silent, even when we’re not speaking. Let us know your opinion by leaving a comment or visiting the forums, where there’s already an interesting thread on the need many of us feel for some background noise to help the words flow.

This autumn there are a plethora of poetry competitions for you to enter. We’ve picked out the biggest of the lot to tell you about on Wednesday, along with some wise words from the competition’s co-judge Ruth Padel.

In the afternoon you’ll be able to read our interview with sci-fi writer and judge of the Aeon Award for short fiction Ian Watson. He tells us what drives him to create worlds, and gives us an insight into what he’s be looking for in competition entries.

Our Friday feature this week will be a travel piece written by me, taking an end-of-season look at Cornwall exploring what makes the southerly British country so popular with writers ranging from Virginia Woolf to children’s author Sharon Tregenza.

If you want to be actively involved in EssentialWriters.com, please get in touch by emailing Judy@EssentialWriters.com. We’re always on the look out for new contributors, so let us know if there’s a feature or a review of a bookfilmmagazine or writing course you’d love to write or anything else you’d like to share with us. This is your site, so make use of it!

One of the characters from King’s new book is keeping a weblog (scarecrowjoe.com) and updating on Twitter (twitter.com/ScarecrowJoe) from under the dome, too. Pretty cool!
