The new anthology from Tonto Books

Tonto Books is seeking submissions of short stories by up and coming writers for their latest creative writing contest. The winning stories, as selected by author Caroline Smailes, will be published in an anthology entitled Even More Tonto Short Stories.

This is the company’s third anthology since it launched in 2005 with its first call for submissions, for the book Tonto Short Stories, followed in 2007 by More Tonto Short Stories.

Both anthologies proved to be instrumental platforms for a number of new writers to launch their careers, underlining the publishing house’s commitment to supporting new writing as well as experienced authors.

Appearing in short story collections has long been a ‘calling card’ for writers on their way to their first novel or to create a buzz about their work in general, so if you have a work of fiction that’s under 5,000 words, send it in to contact@tontobooks.com

The closing date for receipt of entries is July 27th 2009. There is no minimum word count, and Flash Fiction is very welcome.

Entry fee is £6.99 per story and you can send as many entries as you like. As well as being in with a chance of being included in the anthology, your entry will mean that you will receive a copy of the completed anthology. The book will also be available in all online bookstores, including Amazon, as well as all self-respecting bricks and mortar bookstores.

Caroline Smailes, the author of Black Boxes and In Search of Adam, will be judging entries and helping to put the collection together.

Stuart Wheatman from the publishing house says: “Tonto is interested in pop culture, music, true crime, biography and celebrity titles. Mass-market, quirky, left-of-centre… whether it is a comedy drinking guide, memoir or TV tie-in - if the story is worth hearing, then it is worth publishing.”

If your preferred medium is novels rather than short stories, this could still be a great publishing house to get in touch with, as Stuart adds: “Tonto is keen to build up a stable of seasoned biographers and journalists who have manuscripts to send, agents to send them via and are capable of handling ‘on spec’ commissions.”

Journalist who have been published by Tonto include Ashley Hames, whose novel Sin Cities: Adventures of a Sex Reporter came out in 2008, providing an insight into the publishing house’s diverse range of interests.
