Trapdoor Books seeks new writers with novel-length fiction manuscripts

An emerging small press located in Lyons, Colorado, Trapdoor Books is actively seeking book-length fiction manuscripts for publication. Founded by technology consultants with a passion for literature, the publishing house specialises in geek fiction with an eye for the extraordinary.
According to Trapdoor Books, geek fiction is work that includes an intellectual element - anything from Assyrian history to plasma physics - and provides a thoughtful, entertaining diversion for the reader. The best geek fiction challenges readers and surprises them with well-paced, well-researched and compelling stories.
“We publish well-crafted fiction that transcends traditional genre boundaries, providing both literary character development and an interesting plot,” says the geek behind the company, Chris Matney.
He adds: “One of the goals of Trapdoor Books is to create a more challenging, dynamic environment for readers while allowing authors to creatively explore their writing skills without being pigeon-holed into specific genre classifications and expectations.”
The publishing house is seeking new authors with novel-length fiction manuscripts. Manuscripts should be original works written in the English language, preferably of between 60,000 and 140,000 words. However, they will consider manuscripts of all lengths, and encourage experimental topics and styles.
Manuscripts should be aimed at adult audiences as no children’s or pre-teen books will be accepted, and nor will erotic fiction, romance novels, poetry, non-fiction titles, or graphic novels.
“Our philosophy is that some of the best writers in the world are unpublished and waiting to be discovered and the fiction publishing industry can use a fresh injection of new authors and ideas,” says Chris. “For any author we select for publication, we pay real cash advances and a real percentage of sales.”
Query letters are not needed. Manuscripts should be attached as a single Rich Text Format (.rtf) or MS Word (.doc) file. Please use only minimal formatting (no text boxes, no sidebars, and use italics for emphasis - not bold text. Use only one standard font throughout the manuscript. Finally, check the file for viruses before emailing it.
All entries will be acknowledged by email. If you have not received an acknowledgement one week after submitting or cannot submit your work electronically, please feel free to get in touch.
Eventually, entries will be submitted electronically via the website submission form (not yet active). In the meantime, please email manuscripts to Chris Matney at cmatney@trapdoorbooks.com. If you are concerned about doing this, feel free to give Chris a call on 303-440-7778.
