In the pre-Christmas whirl of celebrations and deadlines, it can be easy to forget our writerly aspirations. Whether you’re a features writer who yearns to be an editor or a poet eager to see your work in print, this is no time to get distracted! To keep you motivated, we’ve picked out some great opportunities to post on EssentialWriters.com this week, from writing competitions to job news and journalism courses.
Monday begins with news of a great journalist job for travel writers or anyone with experience as a section editor, so visit the Jobs etc section in the morning if you’re hoping to start 2010 with a brand new journalism job.
On Monday afternoon you can read my interview with Imran Hanif of publishing house Strand Publishing, in which he tells us to stop moaning and get on with writing!
On Tuesday Jennifer Bell will be reviewing Submarine, the latest book by Joe Dunthorne. Read it to find out why the Guardian compared the novel to JD Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. In the afternoon you’ll be able to read my interview with Joe and find out what he thought of the accolade and how he accessed his inner teenager for the voice of his protagonist, 15-year-old Oliver.
On Wednesday you can find out about the best of the writing competitions with a deadline of December 31st 2009, giving you a chance to get your work out there before the year ends.
On Thursday we’re posting news of Susan Grossman’s latest workshop for freelance journalists, designed to boost your chances of producing successful feature pitches.
Our Friday feature has been written by Paul Sutherland, the editor of Dream Catcher literary magazine. Paul examines the outlook for small presses in the current financial climate.
On Saturday we’ll be reviewing the website of author Bernardine Evaristo. Take a look and see if you agree with us, and let us know of any other websites you’d like to see included in this series.
If you have any feedback for the website, would like to submit a review or a feature or have an idea you’d like to share, get in touch with me by sending an email to judy@EssentialWriters.com.
